Rubber Pads and Area Rugs

Rubber pads are essential to put under rugs or carpets as these help in avoiding the wear and tear of the rugs. Also, the rubber pads prevent the rugs from sliding on the wood floors. Besides these rubber pads provide an extra form of cushioning to the carpet and prevents the sudden slips and falls over the rug or carpet. Here are few guidelines to explain the process of using rubber pads with area rugs on wooden floors:

• First of all take the measurements of the area rug properly so that you have a fair idea about the size of the rubber pad you would need to get for your given rug, make sure that you don't include the area of a fringe on your rug.
• Buy a rubber pad as per your rug area specifications. There are certain rubber pads which have an adhesive available on its back making it easier to stick it onto the floor though such rubber pads are useless for wooden hardwood floors as they can spoil and damage the underlying wood. In case you have kids and pets at your place, make sure you go for a kind of rug pad which has a moisture barrier to prevent the seepage of spills or urination. Besides, it would also help in checking the absorption of fluids into the rug pads and the potential odors due to it.
• The rubber pad needs to have a slip free surface so as to grip the hardwood floor aptly and prevent the crinkling and shifting of rug. Thus, look out for a well made rubber pad which are designed to hold the rugs securely in a particular place.
• Another thing to keep in mind before buying a rubber pad is to its size slightly lesser than the rug itself. A half inch difference between the rubber pad and rug would be enough to prevent the pad from showing while being underneath the area rug or alternatively, the rubber pad can be trimmed from sidewards with the help of a sharp scissor.
